The 2017 Chinese language program for Canadian college students drew to an end at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine on June 2.
The tenth time the program has run since it began in 2008, this year’s edition attracted 26 students from prestigious Canadian schools including the University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, University of Toronto and Simon Fraser University.
During the three-week program, the students plunged into an intensive language learning schedule. From new beginners to experienced linguists, the students’ mastery over the Chinese language advanced rapidly and significantly as the weeks went on.

Their increasing Chinese fluency also helped them get the most from the various cultural events and city tours that were organized for them as part of the program. These events included martial arts classes, folk music shows, and learning traditional Chinese medicine treatments such as acupuncture and massage.
Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has endeavored to strengthen its international connections in recent years, opening up Shanghai Summer School programs, offering Chinese medicine courses and training professional acupuncturists.
