Application Guidelines of Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

1. Scholarship candidates and timeline

1.1 Excellent students who study for a bachelor’s degree (5 years for medical programs such as Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture & Tuina; or 4 years for non-medical programs such as Chinese Materia Medica and Rehabilitation Science);

1.2 Excellent students who study for a Master’s degree (3 years);

1.3 Excellent students who study for a doctoral degree (3 years and 1 year extension);


2. Applicant eligibility

2.1 Applicants' academic qualifications and age requirements

Students applying for a bachelor's degree must complete the high school education or above (upper age limit: 25); students studying for a master's degree must complete a college education or above (upper age limit: 35); students studying for a doctoral degree must have a master's degree or above with an equivalent academic level (upper age limit: 40).

2.2 Applicant's language level requirements

Applicants are required to meet the language proficiency requirements of each program.

2.3 Applicants who have been funded by Chinese government or other organizations (unless the statement provides otherwise) will no longer be entitled to Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Studentswho study at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.


3. Scholarship details and standards

For detailed information on scholarship standards for excellent international studentswho study undergraduate, master, and doctoraldegree programs, please refer to Standards for Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students.

Class A scholarship coverstuition fees, basic accommodation in the dormitory for the schooling period (a bed in a double room) and general medical insurance,living expenses on a monthly basis.

For on-campus accommodation, no accommodation subsidy is provided. For off-campus accommodation approved by the university, the accommodation is subsidized according to the actual number of months of on-campus accommodation in accordance with the Standards for Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students.Thestandard is 700 Yuan/student/month for undergraduate students and master students, 1,000 Yuan/student/month for doctoral students; for off-campus accommodation application submitted during the semester, the accommodation subsidy is calculated according to the actual number of off-campus months.

Class B scholarship covers tuition fees and general medical insurance.


4. Application procedures

4.1 Application method

Please log on the website of "SHUTCM International Students Apply"at https://apply.shutcm.edu.cn  and complete the application according to the application process as required.

4.2 Application timeline

January 1st – June 30th 2026

4.3 Application materials

4.3.1 A proof of the highest academic degree and academic transcript; for students about to graduate, a pre-graduation certificate issued by the university where the student was enrolled is also required.

4.3.2 A Study or research plan in China (including personal statement in more than 1000 words; written in Chinese for Chinese-taught programs and English for English-taught programs)

4.3.3 Letter(s) of recommendation

4.3.4 Chinese Proficiency Test HSK scores (non-essential for students of Chinese origin)


5. Review and decision

5.1 The Scholarship and BursaryReview Leading Committeeof Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (hereinafter referred to as the Scholarship and Bursary ReviewLeading Committee) is responsible for leading, coordinating and supervising the review of scholarships, adjudicating students' complaints on the results of review, and designating relevant departments to keep the review material. The Scholarship and Bursary Review Committee of International Education College (hereinafter referred to as the Review Committee) is responsible for the organization and initial review of scholarship applications.

5.2 Applicants who are admitted by our university and awardedwith Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students who study at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (hereinafter referred to as scholarship students) can study in the university with scholarships.

5.3 Freshmen applying for scholarships are generally reviewed in groups based on the progress of the admission, and are initially reviewed by the Review Committee and the University Funding Management Centre and the Scholarship and Bursary Review Leading Committee. Upon approval, a letter of admission, scholarship notice and the visa application form forInternational Students Studying in China (Form JW202) will be sent to the applicant.

5.4 Students studying for a bachelor's degree after completing the undergraduate preparatory program need to be recommended by Shanghai International Preparatory College in the first academic year, and reviewed by the Review Committee and authorized by the Scholarship and Bursary Review Leading Committee.Upon approval, a letter of admission, a scholarship notice and the visa application form for International Students Studying in China (Form JW202) will be sent to the applicant.
