Master Degree Program for International Students

  Established in 1956, the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) was one of the first four TCM colleges across China. The University is located within the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park and Shanghai Free Trade Zone. Today, the University alumni are living in over 100 countries or territories. Jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipal Government, the University is included in the construction projects for national “First-Class Discipline” and High-Level Universities in Shanghai. SHUTCM has over 700 experts and professors, 3 academicians, 2 National Medical Master, 1 prestigious teacher of National Higher Education Institution, 76 mentors for the “National Workshop to Inherit Academic Experience of Senior Chinese Medical Doctors” and 64 municipal-celebrated TCM doctors. In 1999 and 2007, the University was twice awarded the “Excellence in Undergraduate Education” by the Ministry of Education.

  There are 9 colleges, 5 departments and centers, 8 directly affiliated hospital with more than 10,000 beds, 21 subsidiary of collaborated research institutions, 18 research centers and 3 bases of Education Ministry in SHUTCM. The University owns 3 doctoral degrees of class-one disciplines, 24 doctoral degrees of class-two disciplines, 5 master degrees of class-one disciplines, 35 master degrees of class-two disciplines and 3 Post-doctoral Research Stations. In 2012 National Evaluation on Class-one disciplines, Materia Medica ranks first, Traditional Chinese Medicine ranks second, and Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine ranks third.

  There are more than 7,000 full-time students, and more than 15% are degree students. The University is cooperating with several world-class universities, and has set up 10 international centers of traditional Chinese medicine. The first Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine is set up in the United States.

1. Enrollment Majors

  There are two models for the Master Degree program in Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM): full time and part time. The Part-time Master Degree Programs are available only for the student of collaborative schools with International Education College, SHUTCM. Generally, most of the courses are taught in Chinese. Some courses can be taught in English or Japanese . The Full-time Master Degree Program taught in English is available only for the student who has no TCM background.

Applicants can choose mentors listed in the aforementioned Catalog or get more information from “Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Mentor Catalog” at http://lib.shutcm.edu.cn/daoshi/. For a brief introduction of majors, please see General Introduction of Majors (Attachment 2). Applicants are required to contact mentors in the related major and orientation and to submit the Mentor’s Consent Form to Accept International Students for Master Degree Program (Attachment 3), along with the application documents. If applicants have no specific orientation, a mentor can be recommended by the University.

2. Length of Schooling

  The length of Schooling is 3 years, and can be extended to 5 years in maximum.

3. Eligibility for Application

  Healthy foreign nationals

  A bachelor or higher degree

  Under 45 years of age; exceptions can be considered for applicants with competitive academic background or those recommended by collaborative universities

  Applicants for programs taught in Chinese must score at least 180 points in HSK Level V exam. There are no minimal Chinese language requirements for those who apply for programs taught in English or Japanese. Non-native English speakers must score at least 90 points in TOEFL exam or 6.5 points in IELTS exam for the programs taught in English.

  Applicants without TCM background are expected to have certain ability of self-study and research.

4. Application Documents

  Download and fill in the Application Form for International Students to Study Master Degree Program at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Attachment 4).

  Download and ask the mentor to sign the Consent Form to Accept International Students for Master Degree Program. (Attachment 3).

  A copy of the passport.

  Two ID photos (35*53mm) took within 6 months. (One for application form and one for interview notice).

  Photocopy of the highest degree certificate; studying certificate for undergraduate student and copy of the academic degree upon admission; those who completed undergraduate study or are studying in overseas colleges should submit additional notarial certificate. Certificates in other languages need to be translated into Chinese or English, coupled with a notarial certificate of the translation.

  Copy or notarial certificate of transcripts for undergraduate (or higher) education. Transcripts in other languages need to be translated into Chinese or English, coupled with a notarial certificate of the translation.

  Copy of the HSK, TOEFL or IELTS examination results. (Applicants for Chinese-taught Master degree program don’t need to submit HSK if he or she had finished secondary and (or) tertiary education in Chinese; applicants for English-taught Master degree program don’t need to submit TOEFL or IELTS examination results if they are native speakers.)

  Applicants for full-time Master degree program need to submit a Recommendation Form supplied by an associate professor or higher professional title (see Application Form for International Students to Study Master Degree Program at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine) (Attachment 4). Applicants for part-time Master degree program need to submit two Recommendation Forms (see the above-mentioned Application Form). The Recommendation Form can be filled in Chinese or English.

  Academic papers or achievements (if available).

  Payment proof of the application fee (800 RMB)

  The aforementioned documents need to be submit online at http://iec.shutcm.edu.cn/onlineapply.html before the application deadline. Please do not send any document via email. The application will not be processed if the documents are incomplete or sent by email. Applicants may need to submit supplementary documents when the Admission Office requires. Supplementary documents, such as published academic papers or achievements (if available), can be uploaded under the item “Additional Materials” (see the online application webpage.)

  Please bring original copies of relevant documents for registration. The University reserves the right to dismiss students whose original copies are not consistent with application materials. Extra notice will be given to applicants who are required to provide individual financial documents.

  Please bring hard copies of Foreigner Physical Examination Form for registration. Applicants with chronic diseases must notify the school before registration. Please confirm with the school before submitting application if clarification is needed regards entry requirements for applicants with health problems.

  Given any following condition, application fees are not refunded:

    Rejected applications due to incomplete documents

    Disqualified applications

    Applicants quit interviews or entrance examinations

–    Students quit registrations

5. Application Period

  Dec.15th, 2017—Mar.15th 2018 (Working Days only)

6. The Entrance Qualification Verification and Interview

  The application qualification needs to be verified by the University. Upon verification, the applicants shall proceed with the interview. Applicants are required to take a test in terms of summary writing before entering the interview stage (See Attachment 5 for Notice on Test for International Student to Study Postgraduate Program at SHUTCM Year 2018). The result of whether the applicant pass the test or not will be given by the mentor on Consent Form (Attachment 3).

  The interview for Master degree program can be done face-to-face, by telephone or online. (Applicants based in Asian areas are required to attend on-site interviews. Exceptions can only be made by work or health reasons. Applicants are expected to submit written request and certificates for other options.) Applicants need to fill in the Intent to Interview Form for International Students of Master Degree Program at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (See Application form). Please provide valid email address. The Interview Notice will be sent by the Admission Office.

7. Enrollment

  The final enrollment will be based on application documents, interview results and comprehensive evaluation by mentors. Requests for changing mentors will not be accepted after enrollments. The Admission Notice and the JW202 Form will be sent to applicants in middle of June, 2018.

8. Beginning of school

  September. 2018 (Please see the date on Admission Notice and Registration Information for New International Students)

9. Registration

  Students who are accepted shall apply student visa (X1 visa) to Chinese embassy/consulate in your home countries with your passport, Admission Notice and JW 202 / 201 Form. Upon visa approval, please register on the designated time specified in Admission Notice. Students who only submitted school attendance certificate shall then supply the original or copy of the academic degree; otherwise, the qualification for matriculation will be cancelled. Students who are accepted by the university should be presented and register according to the date of the beginning of the 1st semester in academic year 2018. If the students cannot come and register on time, he or she should ask for permission from the university. Otherwise, his or her qualification of admission will be cancelled.

10. Fee

  Tuition

Full-time master degree program taught in Chinese: 34000RMB per year;

Part-time master degree program taught in Chinese: 51000RMB per year;

Full-time master degree program taught in English/Japanese: 51000RMB per year;

Part-time master degree program taught in English/Japanese: 60000RMB per year;

Tuition fee covers lectures, clinical internship, tutor instruction and thesis review. Expenditures for teaching materials, books, accommodation, medical insurance are not covered. For postgraduate students enrolled under cooperation agreement, the content of the agreement shall prevail. According to International Student’s “School Credit Bank” Regulation (See Attachment 6), some courses completed by applicants previously can be recognized as a reference for tuition fee remission.

  Accommodation

Live on campus: Please see Introduction of International Student’s Dormitory (Attachment 7). Notice of the accommodation arrangement will be sent out in middle July. (The accommodation fee may fluctuate).

Live off-campus: Students can live off-campus upon approval by the University and pay on your own.

  Application fee (including examination fee): 800 RMB.

11. Scholarship and Student Stipend

  Chinese Government Scholarship

  The tuition, medical insurance, on-campus accommodation and living expense shall be delivered according to the Regulations on Management of Chinese Government Scholarship by International Cooperation and Exchange Department, Ministry of Education. For Pre-Admission Notice, please contact the Admission Office, International Education College (see clause 14 for ‘Contact Us’). Admitted applicants will be assigned to mentors by the decision of school. Applicants must go through complete applying procedures (online application-paying application fee-evaluation) if they intend to choose mentors.   Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship for international students

  Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship for international students shall be delivered according to relevant documents including Regulations on Application of Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship for International Students. Applicants must also complete the online application on Study-in-Shanghai besides applying on the school website. Application fee only needs to be paid once. For more information, please see Attachment 8.

  SHUTCM International Postgraduate Students Discipline Scholarship and Stipend

  Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Postgraduate Students Discipline Scholarship and Stipend is established by SHUTCM. For more information, please see Trial Regulations on Management of Discipline Scholarship and Stipend for International Postgraduate Students Academic Year 2018 to 2019 Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Attachment 9).

  Degree Stipend for SHUTCM International Postgraduate Students

  Degree Stipend for SHUTCM International Postgraduate is established by SHUTCM. For detailed information, please see Implementing Regulations on Management of Student Degree Stipend for International Postgraduate Students Year 2018 (Attachment 10).

13. Academic degree and diploma

  A diploma of postgraduate (Master Degree) graduation shall be awarded to students who have successfully completed all degree courses, written the academic dissertation, passed the defense organized by the University Academic Degree Evaluation Committee and published one academic paper (with student him/herself as the first writer and SHUTCM as writer’s affiliation) according to the Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Academic Degrees.
