A traditional Chinese medicine workshop welcoming high-end professionals from countries along the Belt and Road Initiative opened at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) on Oct 16.

It was the first of its kind in China targeting experts from B&R countries and organized by a Chinese medicinal higher institute. The three-week-long program will consist of lectures, field trips, salons and cultural activities to introduce China's strength in medical policies, scientific breakthroughs, and health-keeping practices.

The opening ceremony was attended by over 100 students and teachers from SHUTCM, as well as 20 foreign government officials, professors and doctors working in medical and healthcare related areas.

Xu Jianguang, president of SHUTCM, extended warm welcomes to the attendees. By looking back on the historical development of Silk Road, he stressed the importance of frequent exchanges between different cultures and pointed out SHUTCM's on-going efforts to promote China's traditional medicinal treasures.

"With the growing awareness of health issues among modern people, we shall take the lead and bring our profound medicinal essence to the global stage," Xu said.

Chen Kaixian, former president of SHUTCM and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Science, delivered a keynote speech titled TCM and modern medical advances.

He regarded the workshop, to be held at SHUTCM, a platform which not only helps to demonstrate the school's disciplinary advantages, but also facilitates cooperation and exchanges between high-end professionals.

Chen Kaixian, former president of SHUTCM and academician at the Chinese Academy of Science, delivered a keynote speech titled TCM and modern medical advances, which explained TCM's traditional strengths, modern medical challenges, and their further developments in a simple but profound way.
